Aging Americans underwent nearly 3 million Botox treatments last year, according to the American Society of Plastic Surgeons.
Botox is expensive and it’s not for everyone, yet the popularity of the procedure doesn’t surprise consumer advocate and cosmetics expert Paula Begoun. She said people get some Botox injections in their foreheads and maybe around their eyes, and 24 hours later, if they had a wrinkle up there, it’s gone almost 99 percent of the time.
The cosmetics industry has tried to derail the Botox bandwagon with pricey creams and lotions that are said to smooth out wrinkles, but Begoun, who wrote the book “Don’t Go to the Cosmetics Company Without Me,” said none of them lives up to the claims. She said with all the products being launched, there isn’t a single plastic surgeon in danger of going out of business.
She said the best skin-care product for fighting the aging process is a simple sunscreen, used daily.
